KAWS at Harbor City

I walked by the Kowloon ferry area today and saw the KAWS sculpture amongst a colorful, graphic background. Check it out (and the rest of the exhibit) if you are in Hong Kong too.

Sushi Pillows!

I received a nice surprise package from my old co-workers today....sushi pillows! They are by The Original Sushi Pillow. The salmon nigiri is probably my favorite, because of the "rice". The fabric they used was just perfect...white with a pattern of tiny, assorted-sized circles. Nice detail on that one! The salmon maki is great too because it can be used as a real pillow. Same with the edamame, but more like a stuff animal; it's very huggable!

Mmmmm sushi...if only they had a Sushi Land in they Bay Area...

Salk Institute

Last year, I watched My Architect, a documentary on Louis Khan. It was a pretty compelling story about his path as an architect and his personal life between his 3 families. There were some amazing shots of his buildings.... most memorable were the Jatiyo Sangshad Bhaban in Bangladesh and the Salk Institute in La Jolla. I would definitely love to visit his buildings if I could...especially in India!

But on a recent visit to the San Diego area, I actually stayed in La Jolla. The Salk Insitute was close enough to walk to, so I trekked on over there. When I arrived, a campus security guard informed me the interior was closed to the public on the weekend, but I wormed my way in. A researcher on his way in to work was kind enough to let me in to take some photos. Really glad I did, because I would have missed out on seeing the "endless" fountain in person.

First impression of the Institute was how cold and warm it felt at the same time. The straight lines and edges of the buildings seemed utilitarian, but modern. The symmetry and balance of the buildings and elements made it so easy to take wonderful photos of the Institute.

If there is anything to see at all in La Jolla, it would be the Salk Institute.

Olafur Eliasson's "Waterfalls"

this is probably not news anymore, but i'm excited about this...wish i could go to New York to see it for myself.

i saw Eliasson's "Take Your Time" exhibit at the SFMoMA last year, and was amazed. his observations and interpretations are so simply executed, but totally fascinating. (this exhibit is currently at the NYC MoMA and PS 1.)

this time, he's integrating waterfalls into the urban setting, which i think is quite a feat. i love the idea of "disrupting" the city with nature. read more about "Waterfalls" here.

and if you are NYC at the time, check it out! maybe i will make a little detour later in the summer...

Dr. Strangelove loves

i sort of watched Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love The Bomb tonight. "Sort of" because:

1. upon the opening scene, i fell in love with the Pablo Ferro's title sequence because of the typography... so much that i watched it twice before really starting the movie:



2. i didn't pay attention to the rest of the film so much...

3. ...until the ending sequence, which was wonderful! such a great combination with the visuals and Vera Lynn's "We'll Meet Again". loved it:



i'll watch the movie in it's entirety once i get over the opening and final scenes. promise.

went thrift shopping today and saw this cute little cover design. fun shapes and color combinations. the gold had a metallic sheen, which i couldn't really get with this shot (too bad it is blurry too). i'm guessing this book is about London. and maybe their churches (?).
